Teething Trauma

February 17, 2012

It’s been a week. And from what I’ve heard from other mamas, we seem to not be alone in this.

Teething pain is at a new level. Medicated (homeo and not, I even put whiskey on his gums once), with a boob readily available and my complete attention, he sobs. Just lays in my arms and cries. Sleep is disturbed. He barely eats.

He’s also decided it’s time to play the couch game. He climbs up (which he’s allowed to do), then promptly stands and tries to walk (which he is not allowed to d0). First, he gives me a big smile, then proceeds. I take him down and tell him we do not stand or walk on the couch. It is not safe. I don’t know if he thinks I think it’s funny, or if he thinks my waning patience and badly disguised frustration are funny. Either way, now we’re trying to give him a one minute “time out” in the Pack ‘N Play which is now in the living room. Time will tell.

We managed to go to two toddler groups and hit up the park this week, which he loved, although he was coveting others’ soccer and tennis balls much of the time. I am ashamed to say that I was “that mom” at the park: No hat (he won’t wear it anyway), no snack, no drink, and no balls. And Ian was “that kid” at the park: Stealing other kids water bottles, snacks, balls, and bikes.

We had a lovely end to the week by spending it with Bodhi and Mama Ash. Bodhi is up on his feet, and Ian was a champion spotter.

Milo’s First Ergo Experience

He liked it. Until his legs started peeking out the bottom. He ended the walk being carried, but we have high hopes for the future.

Vegan Almond Butter Blondies

January 9, 2012

Don’t you want to have a baby so I can make you food like this?

These are seriously one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. Like pecan pie filling without pecans. Like a buttery chocolate chip cookie minus the chocolate. Like caramelized butterscotch.

Here’s the recipe. Love how simple it is. I used almond milk, and subbed coconut oil for grapeseed or canola oil. As advised, I did not try to cut until they were completely cool, and they came out beautifully clean but were definitely a bit greasy (not that there’s anything wrong with that-maybe doesn’t need that extra 1/4 cup of oil?). I put the cut squares on paper towel to soak up some of the excess.

You need to make these. They’re vegan. Practically health food…

Today was all about teething. Mister had the reddest cheeks and drool for days. And he would occasionally hold his right cheek, look at me, and whimper. It was the sweetest/saddest thing ever.

I distracted him momentarily with an empty Parmesan container.

In other exciting news, I did a client grocery shop without my wallet. Didn’t realize until I’d unloaded the cart, oh, and I had Ian in the pack with me. The teller took pity on me and accepted a check without any identification. I’ll never badmouth Whole Foods again.

Here’s the menu for tomorrow:

Polenta Pizza with Chicken Sausage and Mushrooms

Broccoli Asaigo Soup

Tomato, Chickpea and Bread Stew with Pesto

Baked Chicken Spaghetti

Quinoa Tabbouleh

Tex Mex Couscous Salad with Cilantro Yogurt Sauce

Roasted Garlic Green Beans

Bacon and Egg White Puffs

Banana Walnut Baked Oatmeal

And the magic blondies…

I like my book. I like my futon. I like my teeth.

Santa

December 10, 2011

So we met Santa. Turns out, he makes pepperoni rolls with Danish dough that he folds butter into for three days. True story.

Ian liked looking at Santa, but wasn’t so sure about sitting in his lap. He wanted to cry but held it together for the photo shoot. However, once mama was trying to select the money shots via the crappy PC the sixteen year old Santa’s Helpers were navigating while Ian was being sung Christmas carols from the big man himself, his courage waned and big tears started rolling.

He was fine once he was back safely in mom’s arms and didn’t want to give up the jingle bell. He traded it for a Westside Pavillion Santa’s Adventures book which he promptly consumed a full corner of. Mom got it out of his grip before he got to a staple.

All in all, it was a successful trip to the mall.

And yes, it does appear that Santa has fangs.

Not my most authentic smile.

How I really feel.

Okay mom, I'll give you one.

Doctor Jackpot

December 7, 2011

Well it appears that the fourth time’s the charm. Dr. Nancy Blumstein is wonderful! Real, present, she listened and looked me in the eye and shook my hand and everything. Ian didn’t cry and she takes insurance and we’re on the exact same page in the gnarly book entitled Vaccinations.

I’m sold.

Here’s Ian’s stats as an 11 1/2 month old boy:

22 lbs (50th percentile)
31 inches long (92nd percentile)
17.75 head circumference (big brains)

I’m gonna try to feed him more. It’s hard because he’s not super into food, so I can’t tell if he’s hungry or not. I’m still nursing a lot so I’m not super worried. I’m sure more will be revealed as time goes on.
